10 Ways to Show Love to Someone

Ways to Show Love to Someone
How do you show love to the person you care about most? Whether it’s your husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, parents, or children, you probably want to make sure that they know how much you love them and appreciate them. However, it can be difficult to figure out exactly how to accomplish this task sometimes. In order to show love in the best way possible, keep these 10 ways to show love in mind!

1) Just Smile

Smiling can be a powerful tool in building loving relationships. A genuine smile not only makes you look happy, but it also affects your mood and helps your body deal with stress. Smiling also creates a positive impression on others—people are more likely to be friendly and have positive interactions with someone who is smiling than someone who isn’t. Keep smiling! Even when it’s hard, you’ll find that it will make you feel better. (Loving yourself makes it easier to love others.)

2) Say Thank You

One of my favorite ways to show love is by simply saying thank you. A simple word of gratitude can go a long way. Of course, we all like to think that we already express our appreciation on a regular basis, but do we really? It’s so easy and instinctive for me to say thank you when someone holds a door open for me—but what about when someone helps me solve a problem or even just answers one of my many questions?

3) Compliment

Giving someone a compliment is an easy way to let them know you care. You can either say it directly—as in, I love that top!—or take a subtler approach. Compliment their behavior; if they cook dinner for you, let them know how much you enjoyed it and what made it so good. If they worked hard on a project at work, tell them how impressed you are with their dedication and effort. Though there's nothing wrong with more direct praise, throwing in one or two subtle compliments can help create a mutual sense of appreciation between you and your loved one.

4) Give Them Space

Sometimes it can be tempting to latch onto a loved one and never let go, but you should give them some space. No matter how much you love someone, if they want space, you need to give it to them. Often when people are upset or hurt by something we’ve done, they just need some time alone; and not trying to crowd them will make both of your lives easier. If you’re in a relationship, remember that sometimes giving them space means giving yourself space too; don’t expect more from your partner than they can give in that moment. Remember: Sometimes letting go means literally letting go of their hand!

5) Listen

When you love someone, you want them to be happy. And one of the best ways to make sure that happens is by listening when they speak. Listening doesn’t mean sitting in silence while your partner rambles on about their day or what was on TV last night; it means actively participating in conversation and asking thoughtful questions that reveal you’re paying attention and really care about what they have to say. Remember, sometimes all it takes is a simple You seem really upset/proud/happy about X for your partner to feel like their voice has been heard (even if only for a moment).

6) The Little Things Are Important, Too

Many of us think we show love by doing big things, like giving extravagant gifts or spending large amounts of money on our loved ones. It’s true that these acts matter, but so do smaller gestures that are often overlooked. What are some ways you can show love and make a difference in your loved one’s life without breaking your budget? Think about small things you can do for your family members, friends and co-workers: listen attentively to what they have to say (or write), offer thoughtful compliments when they deserve them, help out around their house or yard when they need assistance, volunteer together at a charitable organization, etc. See how many times you can use these ideas in your day-to-day interactions with others!

7) Let Them Be Themselves

When you’re in a fight with your significant other, let them vent. It’s tempting to try and talk over them or stop them from bringing up issues they are having, but all that does is fuel their anger. Listen patiently, nod your head and have empathy for what they are saying—even if you don’t necessarily agree. Learn how to love someone by letting them voice their feelings rather than pushing yours forward. Even if it feels like you’re not going anywhere or getting anywhere when they are venting at you, just listen patiently and try not to make matters worse by growing defensive or angry yourself.

8) Let Them Vent

Give your partner a safe space and time to vent about work, friends, family, or whatever else is bugging them. It may seem counterintuitive—if you’re not in trouble for anything in particular, why would you want someone to yell at you?—but giving them a platform to unload can help relieve some of their stress and let things go. Think of it as processing: they might vent, get it out of their system, then quickly come back with an I love you or a kiss before they go back to what they were doing before. The benefit?

9) Don’t Hold Grudges

Holding onto grudges is never a good idea—and it’s especially bad for your health. According to one study, people who held onto their resentments suffered more negative cardiovascular and metabolic effects than those who forgave others. Holding onto anger can also take a toll on your happiness levels and make you less optimistic about your future. When it comes to forgiving others, you don’t have to pretend like everything is perfect between you two—just move on from what happened and forgive them (or yourself). Loving someone is hard enough without having anger festering in your heart or seeping into other areas of your life. Forgive, let go, and let love win!

10) Respect Their Opinions

It's important to let your partner know that you are interested in and value their opinions. If they have an idea or a thought, try asking them about it and take some time to understand what they're trying to say. They'll appreciate that you're taking their opinion seriously, which will be a step towards learning how to love someone effectively.
